Congratulations is in order for our very own Adam Posnak. He was recently granted a $4000 grant from the Arkansas Arts Council for his contributions in the field of "Traditional and Contemporary Craft." If you haven't yet read Adam's Studio Potter article, you should! You can find it in the current issue (vol. 41, number 2, "Indigenous). Among the other winners, you may also recognize Tim Latourette, who manages the Architecture woodshop, and teaches courses in Furniture Design.

Images from Jason Hackett's exhibition "Out of Necessity" at the Richmond Arts Center. This is a show I'm really proud to be a part of. It's a great group of artists participating, and the VAC of Richmond has been superb to work with all-around! If you're in the area, please stop by and take a look!

August 30 – October 13, 2013
Curated by Jason Hackett

"The premise of this exhibition explores clay as a contemporary art material strongly connected to its history and traditions.  Recognizing the responsibility art has to question and reflect culture, Hackett presents a selection of work by artists who investigate overlapping themes of ceramics, function, art, and life.  This exhibition honors six artists: Blair ClemoSin-Ying Ho, Mathew McConnell, Adam ShiverdeckerLinda Sikora, and Stan Welsh."

"For L’Artisan Electronique, Unfold modified an open source 3d printer to print ceramics. On the other side of the ceramic printer, Unfold created a virtual pottery wheel in collaboration with Tim Knapen. This pottery wheel gives visitors a chance to ‘turn’ their own forms. At regular intervals, a selection of these designs is printed in clay and exhibited in the space. In L’Artisan Electronique, pottery, one of the oldest artisanal techniques for making utilitarian objects, is combined with new digital techniques. The virtual pottery wheel was realsied by means of a 3D-scanner and digital design software. However, the installation still clearly refers to the artisanal process of working in clay. The printing process imitates the traditional technique used by ceramicists, in which the form is built up by stacking coils of clay. L’Artisan Electronique is an installation commissioned by Z33 Art Centre for the exhibition Design by Performance and developed in collaboration with Tim Knapen and the RepRap community. unfold.be unfoldfab.blogspot.com"

While 3D printing has been in development for years (see BGSU's project under Greg Pugh and John Balistreri), Jonathan Keep has been demonstrating how the average artist can use and adapt these technologies for the small studio. His solutions are very hands-on, very "crafted," and very well conceptualized. His blog and portfolio is worth a look. Click on the image to link:

After three years of serving us as a Resident Artist, Studio Technician, and Adjunct Faculty, we are saying farewell to Jinsoo Song. Jinsoo is departing Fayetteville to join The Clay Studio in Philadelphia. We wish him the best and are thrilled about his transition to Philadelphia. Jinsoo has been a trusted colleague and generous mentor to many of our students He will be missed.

Filling Jinsoo's role will be Kensuke Yamada, who recently arrived in Fayetteville from—you guessed it—The Clay Studio in Philadelphia! We're excited to welcome him to the team, and promise we won't call him Jinsooke or Kensoo.

A scathing, open letter to students at Goldsmith College students in London. It's worth a read, for sure. Basically, it calls out the ways that critique can ultimately lapse into complicity—a worthwhile concern for any student that is trying to understand how to effectively engage with societal concerns.
